Food banks buckle under weight of SNAP cuts

Common Dreams reports that food banks across the country are experiencing surging demand as cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program take effect.

An estimated 4.5 million people — including roughly 1.5 million children — have already lost benefits, while Feeding America calculates that the reductions could eliminate as many as nine billion meals annually.

Food bank leaders say private donations and charitable programs cannot come close to filling the gap left by reduced federal assistance.
