Big Ag wants federal power to override state food standards

California and Massachusetts have restricted the sale of pork from certain confinement systems, creating new market opportunities for farmers who raise animals more humanely. But Big Ag is pushing back through the federal farm bill, seeking to prevent states from setting their own standards for products sold within their borders.

At stake is not just how pigs are raised, but whether states and consumers are allowed to reject industrial food systems in favor of more humane, local, and transparent alternatives.
