An $8 billion lifeline — after some farms have already sunk

by Aallyah Wright, Capital B News

The USDA has announced an $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief program offering one-time payments to farmers facing higher costs and market disruptions, Capital B reports. Payments will be calculated using planted acreage and production cost estimates, with eligibility focused on commodity crops including corn, soybeans and wheat. Specialty crop growers and fishermen will also be considered.

For Mississippi farmer Jay Huggins, even a strong harvest has offered limited protection against rising expenses. Fuel costs have squeezed the returns from hauling his crops between Mississippi and Georgia, forcing him to cut back production. He questions how much relief individual farmers will receive — and what help a payment offers those who have already lost their farms.

Ranchers also worry about being left out. Juan Quinonez Zepeda, who started his Mississippi cattle operation in 2024, says cattle purchase prices have doubled while feed, hay, transport and fertiliser expenses have climbed. Announced days before the midterms, the package arrives amid frustration over whether temporary payments can provide the lasting stability producers need to stay in business.
