Agriculture enters the trade war again

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says Washington expects China to commit to purchasing “double-digit billions” of dollars in American agricultural goods annually over the next three years following the recent summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing.

According to Reuters, the anticipated deal would likely build on the existing 25 million metric ton soybean agreement reached last October, though traders remain skeptical about how much additional demand will materialize beyond current commitments.

Soybeans — long a geopolitical bargaining chip between Washington and Beijing — remain the top U.S. agricultural export to China, with markets also watching closely for any tariff reductions that could reopen broader Chinese private-sector buying.
