Trump eases beef import quotas in bid to lower prices

By Reuters

President Trump announced a 90-day deal allowing up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef into the U.S. without counting against existing tariff quotas, according to Reuters.

The president said the imported beef would be sold 25% below current market prices, although the administration has not disclosed its origin or explained who guaranteed the lower price.

The move is intended to ease grocery costs while the domestic cattle herd — now at a 75-year low — rebuilds. Ranching groups warn that additional imports could further undercut American producers without delivering meaningful savings to consumers, especially as record beef imports have so far failed to halt rising retail prices.
