Maine builds mental health network for PFAS-affected farmers
According to the Portland Press Herald, the state of Maine is expanding its response to PFAS contamination by creating specialized mental health support for affected farmers.
Staff operating the state’s 988 and 211 crisis lines will receive agricultural training, while farmers who have already navigated contamination will mentor those newly confronting it.
PFAS linked to state-permitted sewage sludge has been discovered on at least 90 farms, leaving families facing health concerns, financial instability and the possible loss of multigenerational businesses.
