Distribution of Farms
USDA publishes the data below every 5 years. The charts come straight from USDA.
- In 2018, 89.7% of all US farms were small family farms. By 2023, that had dropped to 86%
- Large farms owned by families increased considerably: from 2.7% of all farms to 4.5% of farms.
- Industrial farms, which are not run by families, increased from 2.1% of farms to 3.5%.
- Large family farms operated 19.6% of all US farmland in 2018, but by 2023 that percentage had risen dramatically — to 30.7%.
