Distribution of Farms

USDA publishes the data below every 5 years.  The charts come straight from USDA.

  • In 2018, 89.7% of all US farms were small family farms.  By 2023, that had dropped to 86%
  • Large farms owned by families increased considerably:  from 2.7% of all farms to 4.5% of farms.
  • Industrial farms, which are not run by families, increased from 2.1% of farms to 3.5%.
  • Large family farms operated 19.6% of all US farmland in 2018, but by 2023 that percentage had risen dramatically — to 30.7%.
