FDA changes “no artificial colors” label to include natural dyes

By The Defender

Federal regulators updated food labeling policy so companies can now use “no artificial colors” on packages even if products contain added dyes — as long as those dyes are naturally derived and not petroleum-based.

Previously, that claim was allowed only for foods with no added color at all. The change is being pitched by the FDA and Health officials as a way to accelerate a shift from synthetic, petroleum-based colors toward natural alternatives like beetroot red and spirulina extract, aligning with broader goals to promote real food.

But critics warn the shift relies on voluntary compliance rather than enforceable rules and could confuse consumers by letting foods carry “no artificial colors” labels even when they contain added colorants, raising questions about accountability and safety.
